Random Coolness in Video Format

Today is a fun post that is fairly short but I encourage you to check these links out.

Ruben's Tube - Fire, Science and Sound...what could possibly be more fun!?!

The Everybodyfields, So Good To Be Home - I like a lot of different kinds of music and this is one of them. Plus I've known that guy singing (Sam) for a long time. He has a wickedly funny sense of humor.

Rodney Mullen - It's a little known fact (maybe not) that during my teen years I was a skate boarder. This guy has been around that long and has been phenominal since then. He made first place in every contest he ever entered except one...he got second there.

Barats and Bereta, Mothers day - I still laugh my head off every time I watch this.

Funny Jesus - I'm a Christian and I thought this was extremely funny. You may not. Sorry. I'm pretty sure Jesus had a sense of humor...plus long brown hair, doe eyes and European cheekbones. He liked to look up a lot too.

OK, thats it.

Are those real?

OK, get your mind out of the gutter...the title refers to Christmas trees!

Nothing too deep for this Friday. Tonight is the Everybodyfields concert and I'm excited for 4 reasons.
1) Even though I don't own their albums its a style of music I like.
2) I know one of the guys in the group and haven't seen him in a LONG time.
3) I'm going with my wife and some friends I love so that's sweet.
4) I am going to try to shoot some pictures which I also love doing.

So it should be fun!

So my contemplation for the moment is about Christmas Trees. Nothing really deep or meaningful here...just musing on the merits of real vs. fake.

I have had a real tree every year of my life that I can remember. When I was a kid we always had a real one...then we got married and my wife insisted on the tree being real. Real trees drive me crazy! You pay $30 to kill a perfectly good tree, drag it home, force it into a stand, get needles everywhere and sap...oh the sap! I HATE tree sap on my hands. Then once you stand it up you find the gaps...the imperfections. Turns out you got a tree that is lopsided. So you turn it...and turn it...and turn it...and then you find out there are no good sides to it! Then there's the watering, constant barrage of needles, fear of fire and so forth and so on.

The coolest part of real Christmas trees comes about February 1st! Sometime around Jan 1 you drag the tree outside somewhere...more needles and (oh the humanity!) more sap. Then you leave it to dry up and completely die...because on February first you set it on fire and watch it completely engulf in mere seconds!

But I'm not bitter. :-)

So last year I told my wife that this year, 2007, was the year of the fake tree. She's had a whole year to adjust and argue about the idea...but I didn't give in. It's fake tree year.

We spent half a day driving around to find the right tree. We didn't have a huge budget and we had to maximize our tree for the money. After much looking and a purchase and refund we found a good deal on an tree. We couldn't afford the $300 trees at Lowe's so we settled on a $50 tree at a local discount store. It was easy to put together and looks OK.

Now here comes the secret...now that we have it, I don't think I like it as well as I would have a real tree. Don't tell my wife though!

It's not that I don't like it...it's so much easier to deal with. I just realized this year though that you have to spend at least a couple hundred dollars to get a really good looking fake tree. That brings me back to my previous point about holiday spending and greed but we wont revisit that...I've made a solemn vow to my wife to be much more enjoyable this holiday season...and also to just enjoy the holiday more myself. So far it's actually working too!

So if you can deal with the sap and the needles...get a real tree. Me, I'm just happy that part is all over with...although I will miss the flames this year.
